Visa Changes to Support 457 & 482 Visa Holders: Pathway to Permanent Residency

The Australian government has announced new visa changes aimed at providing skilled temporary workers with better access to permanent residency. These changes will benefit workers who remained in Australia during the pandemic and continue to support industries facing critical labor shortages.

Who Will Benefit from These Changes?

The new arrangements will improve access to permanent residency for:

  • Existing 482 Visa Holders (Temporary Skill Shortage - TSS Visa) in the short-term stream.

  • Legacy 457 Visa Holders (Temporary Work Skilled Visa) who no longer meet the age requirement.

What Are the New Visa Changes?

Eligible 482 and 457 visa holders who remained in Australia during the pandemic may now apply for the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Permanent Visa. This policy also extends to legacy 457 visa holders who have surpassed the maximum age limit of 45 years, allowing them a new pathway to permanent residency.

Government’s Recognition of Skilled Workers

Minister for Immigration Alex Hawke emphasized that these changes acknowledge the contributions of skilled workers who chose to stay in Australia throughout the pandemic. These workers played a crucial role in supporting key industries such as healthcare, hospitality, and regional employment.

“Eligible skilled workers, already in Australia, will continue to support local businesses facing critical shortages, particularly in health, hospitality, and our regions.” – Minister Hawke

“This is a special concession recognizing those highly skilled migrant workers who chose to stay in Australia throughout the pandemic while continuing to address Australia’s acute shortages. This allows them to stay here, with a pathway to Australian citizenship.” Minister Hawke

How Many Workers Will Benefit?

Approximately 20,000 primary Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) and 457 visa holders currently in Australia may benefit from these changes. Most of these workers are employed in highly skilled professions, particularly in healthcare, hospitality, and regional industries.
