What is the Subclass 309 Visa?

The Partner Visa (Subclass 309) is a temporary visa for people who are in a genuine relationship with an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen — and who are currently living outside Australia.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Check Your Eligibility

Confirm that you and your partner meet all the relationship, health, and character requirements before starting the application.

Create Your ImmiAccount

Both you and your sponsor (Australian partner) need to create separate accounts on the Australian Government's ImmiAccount portal at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.

Sponsor Lodges Sponsorship Application

Your Australian partner (sponsor) must first submit a sponsorship application online through ImmiAccount.

You Lodge Your Visa Application

Once the sponsor has submitted the sponsorship, you (the applicant) lodge your Subclass 309/100 Partner Visa application online. Both applications are linked together.

Pay the Application Fee

Pay the visa application charge (VAC) at the time of lodgement. See the fee section below.

Submit Supporting Documents

Upload all required documents to support your application (see Documents Required section below).

Health Examinations

You will be asked to complete a medical examination with an approved panel physician (doctor). You will receive a health check request through your ImmiAccount.

Police Clearance Certificates

You must provide police clearance from every country you have lived in for 12 months or more since turning 16.

Wait for Processing

The Department of Home Affairs will assess your application. They may request additional documents or an interview.

Visa Decision

If approved, you will receive the Subclass 309 (provisional) visa. After approximately 2 years, your visa will be assessed again and upgraded to Subclass 100 (permanent), provided you are still in a genuine relationship.

  • Valid passport

  • Financial: Joint bank accounts, shared bills, joint loans or property

  • Sponsor's passport or Australian citizenship/PR document

  • Health examination results (completed via eMedical)

  • Police clearance certificates from all countries lived in for 12+ months since age 16

  • Evidence of de facto relationship (12 months cohabitation or relationship registration)
