IR5 Parent Visa
The IR5 visa process usually takes around 10–18 months, depending on USCIS and embassy processing times. Since it is an Immediate Relative visa, there are generally no annual quota delays.
The IR5 Visa is an Immediate Relative immigrant visa for parents of US citizens who are 21 years or older. It allows parents to live permanently in the United States and obtain a Green Card. Since it falls under the Immediate Relative category, it is not subject to annual visa quotas or long waiting backlogs.
Parent of a US citizen aged 21+
US citizen must file sponsorship petition
Genuine parent-child relationship proof required
Sponsor must meet financial requirements
Applicant must pass medical and background checks
The sponsor must be a US citizen aged 21 or older sponsoring their biological, adoptive, or step-parent.
The US citizen sponsor files Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative) with USCIS to establish the parent-child relationship.
After reviewing the petition and supporting documents, USCIS issues an approval notice if the application is accepted.
The approved case is transferred to the National Visa Center for fee payments, document collection, and visa processing.
Applicants submit passports, birth certificates, police certificates, medical records, and the sponsor’s Affidavit of Support.
The parent must complete a medical examination with an authorised panel physician before the visa interview.
The parent attends an immigrant visa interview at the US embassy or consulate and answers questions about eligibility and sponsorship.
If approved, the IR5 immigrant visa is issued in the passport for travel to the United States.
The parent enters the United States using the IR5 visa and becomes a lawful permanent resident upon arrival.
The physical Green Card is mailed to the parent’s US address after arrival in the United States.
