The Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa is a permanent residency visa designed for skilled workers who do not need to be sponsored by an employer, a state or territory government, or a family member. It is a points-tested visa under Australia's General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. Once granted, it allows you and your family to live, work, and study anywhere in Australia indefinitely — with no geographic restrictions. It is widely regarded as the most flexible and prestigious skilled migration pathway, though it is also highly competitive, reserved for applicants with strong points scores and high-demand occupations.
Have an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
Obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority
Score at least 65 points on the points test (higher scores increase invitation chances)
Be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation
Meet competent English language requirements (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent)
Submit a valid Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect
Receive and accept an Invitation to Apply (ITA) from Home Affairs
Meet health and character requirements
Use the Department of Home Affairs points calculator to estimate your total score across age, English, work experience, education, and other factors.
Confirm your occupation appears on the MLTSSL (Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List).
Apply to the relevant Australian assessing authority for a positive skills assessment for your occupation.
Sit for IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or OET and achieve the required scores.
Lodge your EOI via SkillSelect — Australia's online immigration management system.
Wait for an ITA from the Department of Home Affairs. Rounds are held periodically; higher points are prioritised.
Undergo a medical examination with an approved panel physician and obtain police clearance certificates from all countries you've lived in.
Once invited, you have 60 days to lodge your complete visa application online via ImmiAccount along with all required documents.
A case officer will assess your application. Additional documents may be requested. You will be notified via ImmiAccount.
