What is the Student Visa (SV / INZ Fee-Paying Student Visa) Visa?

The New Zealand Fee-Paying Student Visa is the primary visa for Indian students enrolled in full-time courses at New Zealand institutions. It allows students to stay for the duration of their course (up to 4 years) and, in most cases, work part-time for up to 25 hours per week during term time and full-time during scheduled holidays. The application process is now fully digital through Immigration New Zealand's Immigration Online system.

Step-by-Step Application Process

1

Secure Admission

Receive a confirmed offer of place from an accredited New Zealand institution registered with the Ministry of Education or NZQA.

Arrange Funds Proof

Arrange proof of living expenses. The preferred method is the Funds Transfer Scheme (FTS): transfer NZD 20,000 to an approved NZ bank account. Bank statements or a financial sponsor letter are also accepted.

Take English Proficiency Test

Take an INZ-approved English language test (IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, etc.) meeting the required scores for your institution and course level.

Complete Medical Examination

Book and attend a medical examination and chest X-ray with an INZ-approved panel physician in India. Allow 2–4 weeks for results.

Apply Online

Create an account and apply at apply.immigration.govt.nz. Applications can be submitted up to 120 days before the course start date.

Upload Documents and Pay Fees

Upload all required documents digitally. Pay NZD 750 total (NZD 485 + NZD 265). IVL may apply — check immigration.govt.nz/fees.

Await eVisa

Track via Immigration Online. INZ will contact you if additional documents are required. Apply at least 3 months before your course start date during peak periods (November–March, June–August).

Required Documents

  • Valid Indian passport (minimum 3 months validity beyond intended departure)

  • Completed online student visa application form

  • Official offer of enrolment / acceptance letter from the NZ institution

  • Evidence of tuition fee payment or scholarship letter

  • Proof of living expenses: NZD 20,000/year (FTS confirmation, bank statements, or financial sponsor letter)

  • PAN Card or Aadhaar Card as proof of identity (voter ID, ration card, and driving licence are not accepted by INZ)

  • English language test results (IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, etc.)

  • Medical certificate and chest X-ray from INZ-approved panel physician

  • Academic transcripts and qualifications

  • Passport-sized photographs

  • Accommodation arrangement evidence in New Zealand

  • Pathway Student Visa cover letter from education provider (if applying for a pathway course)

Processing Time

Student Visa

During peak periods (Nov–Mar, June–Aug), processing is slower. Apply at least 3 months in advance. INZ may issue an Approval in Principle (AIP) for early applications.
