Digital Nomad Visa 2026 guide for Indian remote workers travelling and working abroad
Updated on: 14/07/2026

Explore the Best Digital Nomad Visa Options Worldwide: Work and Travel

If you can do your job from a laptop, you no longer need to stay tied to one city. Over the last few years, more than 60 countries have introduced a legal way for remote workers to live abroad while still being paid by a company or clients back home. These are called digital nomad visas, and 2026 is shaping up to be the year they go from a niche travel hack to a mainstream way of working.

This guide breaks down how these visas actually work, which countries have the most attractive programmes right now, and what you need to get your application right the first time.

As an immigration consultancy that helps people navigate exactly this kind of move, we've pulled together the details that actually matter: income thresholds, processing times and tax rules

Understanding Digital Nomad Visas: What You Need to Know

A digital nomad visa is different from a normal work visa in one key way: it lets you live in a country while working for an employer or clients based outside that country. You're not entering the local job market. You're bringing your existing income with you.

Most programmes share a common structure:

  • Proof of remote work - a contract, employer letter, or client agreements showing your income comes from abroad
  • A minimum income or savings threshold - this varies hugely, from around $24,000 a year in Malaysia to over $50,000 in Estonia
  • Health insurance valid in the host country for the full length of stay
  • A clean criminal record certificate, usually apostilled and translated
  • A time limit - anywhere from six months (Japan) to five years (Thailand), sometimes renewable

The one thing every country agrees on: you generally cannot take local employment or serve local clients on this visa. Break that rule and you risk visa cancellation.

Tax residency is the detail people miss most often. Most countries start treating you as a tax resident once you cross 183 days in a 12-month period - after that, your worldwide income may become taxable locally, even if it's earned from a company overseas. Read the tax section of your target country's visa before you commit to a length of stay.

Top Countries Offering Digital Nomad Visas in 2026

Estonia - Digital Nomad Visa

Estonia was one of the first countries to launch a dedicated remote-work visa, and it remains straightforward to apply for from India.

  • Stay duration: Up to 12 months (365 days)
  • Income requirement: Gross monthly income of at least €4,500 (approx. ₹4.1 lakh/month at mid-2026 exchange rates), shown for the 6 months before applying
  • Processing time: 15–30 days, occasionally up to 60 days for complex applications
  • Application fee: Roughly €80–120, plus a VFS Global service fee (approx. ₹2,000) for Indian applicants submitting through VFS

Spain - (Digital Nomad Visa)

One of the better-balanced European options for Indian remote workers, especially freelancers and IT professionals.

  • Stay duration: Up to 1 year via consulate application, or up to 3 years if applying from inside Spain (renewable to 5 years total)
  • Income requirement: 200% of Spain's Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI) - roughly €2,850/month in 2026
  • Applicants need a university degree or at least 3 years of relevant professional experience - this is a common trip-up point, so gather your degree certificates and experience letters early
  • All foreign documents (degree certificates, PCC) must be apostilled and translated into Spanish by a certified translator

UAE - Virtual work residence visa

By far the most accessible option for Indians in terms of geography, cost of relocation, cultural familiarity, and flight connectivity and a genuinely popular choice among the large existing Indian community in the UAE

  • Stay duration: 1 year, renewable
  • Income requirement: Minimum USD 3,500/month (approx. ₹2.9 lakh/month)
  • Tax treatment: 0% personal income tax in the UAE - but remember the "deemed resident" rule above if your Indian-sourced income exceeds ₹15 lakh and you're not taxed anywhere else
  • Applications are processed through GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (other emirates), and can often be completed without leaving India first

Thailand - Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

A strong choice for Indians because of proximity, lower cost of living, and no fixed income requirement - just proof of savings.

  • Stay duration: 5-year multiple-entry visa; each entry allows 180 days, extendable once for another 180 days
  • Financial requirement: THB 500,000 (approx. ₹11.7 lakh) in savings, held consistently for at least 3 months before applying - a recent lump-sum transfer is a common reason embassies reject Indian applications, so plan your savings history ahead of time
  • Application fee: THB 10,000. Fully online application through the Thai e-Visa portal, no in-person embassy visit required

Croatia - Digital Nomad Temporary Residence Permit

A genuine EU/Schengen base with lower income thresholds than Spain or Portugal, and a full tax exemption on foreign income.

  • Stay duration: Up to 18 months, with one possible 18-month extension
  • Income requirement: Around €3,600/month, indexed annually to Croatia's average salary
  • Indian applicants can apply either through a Croatian embassy/consulate abroad or, once inside Croatia on a short-stay basis, at a local police station

Other Countries Worth Exploring in 2026

Beyond the countries detailed above, here's a fast-reference list of additional countries running digital nomad or remote-work visa programmes, several of which are increasingly popular with Indian applicants:

  • Greece - Digital Nomad Visa, 12 months (renewable into a 2-year residence permit), around €3,500/month income requirement, plus a 50% income tax reduction for the first seven years if you become a tax resident.
  • Italy - Digital Nomad Visa (2024 onward) for highly skilled remote workers, requiring at least six months' relevant experience or a university degree.
  • South Korea - "Workation" visa allows up to 2 years for remote workers meeting the income threshold.
  • Hungary - White Card, up to 2 years, income requirement of roughly €3,000/month.
  • Mexico - Temporary Resident Visa commonly used by remote workers, income/savings-based, valid up to 4 years total.

Income thresholds, processing times, and eligibility rules across all of these change often — always verify current figures on the destination country's official immigration or foreign affairs website before applying, and check whether Indian citizens need a prior Schengen or entry visa to even lodge the application in person.

Tips Specifically for Indian Applicants

  • Start your PCC and Apostille early (6–8 weeks). These usually take the longest and can delay your visa application.
  • Keep proof of foreign income ready. Carry salary slips, ITRs, employer letters, or client contracts showing you earn from outside the destination country.
  • Check the correct VFS Global centre. Find the right VFS or embassy for your state before booking your visa appointment.
  • Understand tax rules before staying abroad. If you plan to stay for a long time, check how it may affect your Indian tax residency.
  • Plan money transfers in advance. Check your LRS limit and avoid last-minute large transfers, as they may require extra explanation.
  • Buy the right health insurance. Make sure it covers your destination country and meets the minimum visa requirements.
  • Apply for your visa 8–12 weeks before travel. This gives enough time for document preparation and visa processing.
