Tasmania Skilled Migration Program 2026-27 Is Now Open: What You Need to Know

Tasmania Skilled Migration Program 2026-27 open for ROIs showing subclass 190 and 491 nomination places

Tasmania Skilled Migration 2026-27 Is Now Open

The Tasmania Skilled Migration Program 2026-27 officially opens to new Registrations of Interest (ROIs) on 17 August 2026. Tasmania has been allocated 2,050 nomination places for the year — 1,250 for subclass 190 and 800 for subclass 491 — along with revised priority attributes, updated scoring, and a higher nomination fee.

If you're planning to apply, here's exactly what changed, why it changed, and what to do before the first invitation round.

Top 5 Things You Need to Know About Tasmania Skilled Migration 2026-27

  1. The program opens on 17 August 2026. ROIs open that day, and weekly invitations begin Thursday, 20 August 2026.
  2. 2,050 total nomination places are available — 1,250 for subclass 190, 800 for subclass 491.
  3. Scoring has changed to reward longer contribution. Applicants with a longer history working in Tasmania now get more credit, with greater point differentiation based on employment length.
  4. The offshore 491 Invitation-Only pathway is paused for the year, following the Australian Government's priority on processing applicants already in Australia — a shift from our earlier Tasmania occupation list update.
  5. The nomination fee has risen to $387 ($425.70 with GST) — though submitting an ROI is still free.

Weekly Invitations Begin 20 August

Starting Thursday, 20 August 2026, Migration Tasmania will issue weekly invitations to eligible ROIs to apply for nomination. Invitations are rolled out progressively across the year, rather than all at once, to keep places available throughout the program.

Each week, Migration Tasmania publishes:

  • The number of ROIs invited to apply for nomination
  • The lowest scores invited that week
  • How many nomination places remain
  • The total number of ROIs currently on hand

This weekly update also includes an estimated score needed for nomination — calculated as the average of the lowest scores invited over the past three months. If your priority attributes and score fall below that rolling average at assessment time, your nomination won't be approved. This is a key detail for anyone tracking Tasmania Skilled Migration 2026-27 eligibility in real time.

Why the Program Changed

Migration Tasmania reviewed the previous program year and identified a few recurring issues:

  • Applicants often struggled to pick the correct priority attribute, especially ones tied to salary ranges or employment length.
  • Some attributes didn't properly distinguish between candidates with very different lengths of time working in Tasmania.
  • The Gold Pass requirement sometimes rewarded short-term or less secure jobs over applicants with a longer, stronger contribution to the state.
  • The policy guidance on the website needed more clarity and detail.

What's Actually Changed

  • Based on that feedback, several updates have been introduced for 2026-27:
  • Clearer and simpler wording for priority attributes
  • Revised scoring that gives more credit for a longer history of contribution to Tasmania
  • Greater point differentiation based on how long someone has been employed
  • Updated guidance around leave periods and gaps between jobs
  • The TSE Gold priority attribute now requires at least 30 hours per week in a minimum of one job to qualify
  • Income-based attributes now aligned with Australian median and average earnings, along with the Temporary Skilled Migration
  • Income Threshold (the Priority Income Level itself stays at $57,000/year or $28.85/hour)
  • New caveats for employment matching skills assessments or study, specifically for massage therapists and motor mechanics/service technicians
  • The nomination application service fee has increased to $387 ($425.70 including GST). Submitting a Registration of Interest is still free.
  • Worth noting: If you submitted an ROI in the last six months, it may be worth withdrawing and resubmitting under the new criteria, since the updated scoring could improve your chances significantly.

Worth noting: if you submitted an ROI in the last six months, it may be worth withdrawing and resubmitting under the new criteria — the updated scoring could improve your chances significantly under Tasmania Skilled Migration 2026-27.

One Pathway Is Paused This Year

The Subclass 491 Overseas Skilled Occupation Profiles – Invitation Only Pathway will not be issuing any invitations for the 2026-27 program year. This pathway normally allows Tasmania to nominate overseas candidates without a Tasmanian job offer, based on their skills and experience alone.
This pause follows the Australian Government's decision to prioritise visa processing for applicants who are already in Australia.
That said, overseas health and teaching professionals who secure a job with a Tasmanian health provider or school remain eligible for nomination through the subclass 190 Overseas Applicant (Health or Education Sector Job Offer) Pathway.

What This Means for Your Application

For anyone tracking Tasmania Skilled Migration 2026-27, here's the practical takeaway:

  • Onshore applicants with a genuine, longer-term contribution to Tasmania are now better rewarded under the revised scoring.
  • Offshore applicants without a Tasmanian job offer no longer have the invitation-only route — a Tasmanian employer connection or the health/education job-offer pathway is now essential.
  • Recent ROI submitters should check whether resubmitting under the new criteria improves their score.
  • Everyone applying should update their bookmarked portal link and prepare documents before the 20 August invitation round.
