Overview

The United Kingdom is one of the world's most sought-after immigration destinations for Indian nationals. Since Brexit, the UK operates an independent points-based immigration system open equally to all nationalities — including Indians. With world-ranked universities, a thriving NHS-driven job market, and the largest Indian diaspora outside India, the UK offers clear pathways from temporary visits through to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and British citizenship.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for an Indian to get UK ILR?

Most routes require 5 years of continuous lawful UK residence. The Global Talent (Exceptional Talent) route qualifies after 3 years. Once ILR is obtained, British citizenship is available after 12 more months — making the fastest route to a British passport approximately 4 years total.

Do I need IELTS for a UK visa as an Indian national?

Requirements vary by visa type. Student visas require IELTS Academic. Skilled Worker and Health & Care require IELTS at B1 level (4.0+). Family visas require IELTS Life Skills at A1 (entry), A2 (extension), and B1 (ILR). Exemptions exist if your degree was entirely in English.

What is the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)?

The IHS is a mandatory annual payment giving visa holders NHS healthcare access. The 2025 rate is £1,035 per year per person, paid upfront for the full visa duration. Health & Care Worker Visa holders and their dependants are fully exempt.

Can a UK Student Visa lead to permanent settlement?

Yes, indirectly: Student Visa → Graduate Visa (2-3 years) → Skilled Worker Visa (5 years) → ILR is a well-established pathway. Time on the Student Visa itself typically does not count towards the 5-year ILR qualifying period.
